Harry the Chinese Praying Mantis
HI! I'm Harry!
- Home: Memphis, Tennessee, although his ancestors are Chinese.
- Likes: Eating, traveling, eating, hanging out with friends and sometimes, eating.
- Dislikes: Harry turns up his nose at opera, rampaging rhinos and an annoying little fish named Coy Koi.
- Favorite Foods: A Southern-fried fanatic, Harry loves anything fit for The King (Elvis, that is) like jelly donuts, biscuits, bacon, grits, gravy, Gus’s Fried Chicken, Soul Burgers, sausage, ice cream, pancakes and deep-fried Twinkies.
- Biggest Dream: Visit every single state in America and blog about it.
- Favorite Movie: The Incredible Journey, 3000 Miles to Graceland.
- Unusual Party Trick: Harry has excellent eyesight and can see movement up to 60 feet away—especially helpful for sneaking past Insectarium security guards or spotting his next meal.
- Favorite Quote: When asked what he missed most about Memphis, Elvis once said, “Everything.” Harry agrees.
- The better to see you with. Mantids have a total of five eyes—two large and three smaller ones in between.
- Pray or prey? Mantids are named for the bent position of their front legs, not their predatory behavior.
- Wait for it… Praying mantises do not actively hunt their prey. Instead, they wait without moving, ready to grab any passing insect.
