Tarantula
He’s hairy, but shouldn’t be considered scary. The tarantula rarely bites humans unless he’s provoked, and his venom is not life threatening.
Found in the southern and southwestern states, the tarantula family includes the largest spider species known. One type—the Goliath Tarantula—reaches a body length of five inches with a leg span of a foot!
This hairy hunter doesn’t wait around for his dinner. He chases after his prey, catching and then eating it.
Fascinating Facts
- Home sweet home. Tarantulas often nest in old animal burrows or naturally occurring crevices in the landscape.
- Ouch! Tarantulas have barbed, irritating hairs by their back legs that they can throw at an enemy. These hairs can cause allergic reactions and eye injuries in humans.
