Black Widow

She’s beauty and the beast all wrapped up into one. The black widow spider is a villainous vamp known for her glossy coat, the red hourglass marking on her back and her venomous bite!

Don’t worry, she’s usually not deadly. But her bite does cause cramps, nausea and, ugh, vomiting.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to escape the black widow. She can be found in nearly every state, but is seen most commonly in the South from the Carolinas to California.

Fascinating Facts

  • Choose your poison. Black widow venom, drop for drop, is more poisonous than even rattlesnake venom.
  • The weaker sex? Male black widows are smaller than the female and can’t hurt you.
