Millipede

Even with all those legs, the millipede is a slow mover. He doesn’t bite or sting. Instead, he rolls up into a ball as a method of defense.

You’ll find this creepy crawler in moist organic matter around your home such as mulch, wood chips or leaf piles.

If you touch him, wash your hands! The millipede secretes a stinky fluid to help keep predators away, and it can burn your eyes if you rub them.

Fascinating Facts

  • Twice as nice. A millipede has two pairs of legs on each body segment, while a centipede has only one.
  • Lots of legs! There are as many as 10,000 different species of millipedes.
