The unique appetite of a bug

Tuesday April 5 2011

It's hard to beat a great meal, sometimes. As a praying mantis, I’m a carnivore, so I stick strictly to an all-meat diet. Cricket soufflé. Grasshopper gumbo. The usual, you know? I wouldn’t recommend that type of approach for a human, though. Fruits and vegetables are really important for a well-balanced meal for you all.

Moderation is what's key for a bug, though. In fact, most of my insect friends only need to eat a few times each month! Some insects may even be able to last up to a month between meals. We eat only what we need, and the most important ingredient for us to be happy is water. An animal that may be able to go weeks without food probably wouldn’t last more than a few days without a big gulp of H2O!

All this food talk is actually making me hungry…and thirsty!
