Play Ball!

Wednesday April 20 2011

You may remember that last year I took a trip to see a minor league baseball game when I was staying in Memphis. Guess what? This spring has been an even bigger treat for me. Being in Tampa during March and early April, I was able to watch some Major League Baseball teams up close and personal. The New York Yankees make their home during spring training right here in Tampa, and the Philadelphia Phillies also get ready for the season down the road in Clearwater. In fact, the Phillies have been conducting their spring training exercises here since 1948! That's a long time, especially for a bug.

I'm glad they play spring training in a warm place like Tampa, though. If I had to watch baseball games outside in New York during March, I wouldn't make it very long. Brrrr! Most insects don't last too long with really cold temperatures outside. That's why you see so many of us inside during the winter and not outdoors.

Spring training is over now, but that doesn't mean my baseball fix is over. The Tampa Bay Rays of the American League are just over the bridge in St. Petersburg for the regular season. (Why aren't they called the St. Petersburg Rays, though?)
