Harry Makes a Change for the New Year

Monday January 4 2010

For the past few weeks, I’ve heard many of my insect friends talk about “making a revolution.” That was pretty surprising to me, because the Insectarium is a pretty great place to live. Why would anyone want to revolt?!

As it turns out, I was way off. They were talking about making resolutions. More specifically, they were talking about New Year’s resolutions.

It’s that time of year. People, insects and arthropods everywhere are hoping this year will be a great one, and to make it happen they are vowing to do something new. Here at the Insectarium, Paw Paw the Hissing Cockroach has vowed to learn how to use a computer so he can e-mail his family members to stay in touch more often. Speedy the Millipede is trying to run at least once or twice a week so he can hopefully live up to his name this year. And although she looks great already, Skimmer the Dragonfly is trying to be slimmer by going on a protein diet.

My resolution? I’ve decided that I want to be more eco-friendly. I’m not talking about going green, because I’m a mantis and I’m already green. I just want to find more simple things that I can do to help the environment, like turning out the light if I’m the last person to leave a room or using less water when I take a bath or brush my teeth.

Did you make a New Year’s resolution? If not, would you help me with mine? Ask your parents what your family can do to be more eco-friendly. We’ve only got one Earth; let’s take care of it.
