Harry Is Taking out the Trash

Monday December 7 2009

When you’re an insect like me, you tend to notice the little things more. Because what is little to you is totally HUGE to me.

Just the other day I was walking through the Tiny Termite Café here at the Insectarium. I saw a man try to throw away a napkin, but he missed the trash can. He didn’t seem to notice, but I sure did. That napkin was as big as a king-size bed to me!

That’s when I decided to take up a new job here at the Insectarium. Well, it’s really more of a volunteer position. From now on, I’m going to help pick up the trash.

I’ve never had a job before. Most of us mantids just tend to do our own thing. We don’t usually work together like ants or termites. Those insects work together to support their colonies.

Well, I think of everyone here at the Insectarium as part of my extended family, so I’m really excited to pitch in and help keep the place clean and tidy. I couldn’t just let litter sit there anyway.

So far, it’s been a ton of fun. If you’re like me, maybe you could find a way to volunteer to pick up litter too. I bet the people and the insects that live nearby would appreciate it.
