Harry Catches all Kinds of Krewes

Monday February 23 2009

Man oh man, this mantis is exhausted! Who knew that there were so many Mardi Gras celebrations and parades? There are over 200 of them!

I’ve been doing my best to go to every one of them. But I can only do so much. Luckily, most of the best parades run near the Insectarium.

Thursday night, Miley the monarch butterfly and I saw the Krewe of Muses parade. It was really funny. Miley really got excited when the floats threw out sparkly, hand-decorated shoes.

Friday evening, Cuddles the scorpion and I got to see the Knights of Hermes parade. Cuddles was super-excited, because it’s very much a nighttime affair. Marchers carry torches and floats covered in lights that illuminate the whole street. It was really breathtaking.

After that I got to see the incredible Krewe d’Etat parade. It was seriously wild. It’s put on by a secret group that takes orders from somebody called “the Dictator”—very mysterious. Every year they have a different theme poking fun at society. I’m pretty sure they were making fun of celebrities and politicians this year.

I was so tired after Friday that I slept through most of Saturday. Which is a shame, because I wanted to go see the Krewe of Endymion parade. I heard Kid Rock was the Grand Marshal this year. But it was all the way across town.

Sunday, Luckie the ladybug and I saw the Krewe of Bacchus parade. It was probably the wildest one I’ve seen yet. There were so many bead necklaces being thrown, I almost ended up getting completely buried! I think I saw Val Kilmer at some point, but I was pretty busy dodging beads.

Maybe next year my friends and I can start our own Insect Krewe and put on our own parade. Then again, maybe not. There are many parades to see, I think I’d rather just watch.

That’s all for now. I’ve got some big events lined up for the next few days, so I’m going to get some more rest now.
