I know it’s hard to believe, but I’ve never really been the romantic type. Maybe I just haven’t met the right insect. My usual Valentine’s Day routine is to take my Mom out for dinner and a movie. But since Mom’s back home in Memphis and I’m here at the Insectarium, it’s time for a new plan.

I’m a Chinese praying mantis, but I learn new things about Chinese culture every day. For example, did you know there is a Chinese New Year? I didn’t. Can you believe that? It’s really neat. It usually takes place about a month after the regular New Year. This Chinese New Year started on January 26, 2009.

One great thing about living here at the Insectarium is that we’re close to all sorts of Audubon-related attractions. Every so often we like to get out and see what’s going on at the Aquarium or one of the parks.

I’m not ashamed to admit it. My wings aren’t made for any sort of long-distance travel. They get me from perch to perch just fine. But I have always wondered what it would be like to fly long distances, like Miley the monarch butterfly. She can travel thousands of miles with her wings.

I love movies. I especially like kung fu movies. And animated movies about insects. Imagine my delight when I found both of my favorite things in one movie! I’m talking about “Kung Fu Panda,” which I just watched on DVD.

Even though it wasn’t possible to start my own campaign for president (apparently you have to be human), I’m still very interested in President Obama’s inauguration. That’s why I’ve been glued to the TV all day with several of my politically minded pals.

I’m not sure what a recession really is. But I’m pretty sure it’s a bad thing. I do know that it’s got nothing to do with the incredible King Cakes I’ve been eating since Carnival started. And you’ve heard how much I love King Cakes.

It’s official! Carnival Season is here in New Orleans. I’m not exactly sure what all of this means, but Woody tells me I have seven weeks of parades, music and good food in front of me.
